Human-Interface Revolution

US scientists have presented a high-tech-arm prosthesis, the ,Autonomous Labs Team‘ from the ,Freie Universität in Berlin‘ („Free University of Berlin“) shows how to mentally steer a car - is there a human-interface revolution lying ahead of us?

One of the big topics at the annual meeting of the AAAS (Advancing Science, Serving Society) was how people with special needs could control their prosthesis or wheel-chair just by using their thoughts.

Arm prosthesis with mental control

An arm-prosthesis intuitively controlled by the brain was shown by an American veteran who has lost his forearm 2008 in Iraq. According to his statement „there are no limits in moving“. The control of the forearm is based on a technology generated by the pioneer Todd Kuiken from the Northwestern University of Chicago.

Nerve endings that have moved the former natural arm, are being implanted in the breast musculature - and control the high-tech-prosthesis from there.

Controlling the wheel-chair without using physical power

The wheel-chair of the future receives orders from electrodes that take up signals from the brain. The electrodes are fixed on a bathing-cap-style hat which is worn by the wheelchair user. The interaction by the brain and the wheelchaircomputer has been generated by José del R. Millán and collegues at the École Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne (Switzerland). The computer reacts very sensitively to the brain signals so that the wheelchair-driver can actually have a conversation without losing control over the vehicle.

Thoughts control the driving direction

The ,Autonomous Labs Team‘ around Prof. Dr. Raúl Rojas from the ,Freie Universität in Berlin‘ has presented a method of how to steer a car just by using thoughts. Similarly to the wheel-chair model in Lausanne also sensors fixed on the head measure brain activity and send information to the car. A video can bee watched here

All technologies are still in development, emphasize the scientists. The new technologies are showing the way to the future and provide promising results, but they still have to overcome some challenges until the wheel-chair e.g. can be used by a large number of patients.

We are already excited about future developments and are looking forward to an innovative future!

The Mac App Store is a perfect example for process innovation.

January 18, 2011
Apple generates innovative sales channel

The concept of the apps is now also available for Apple’s immobile devices from the Mac App Store: And the success already speaks for itself: There have been loaded over a million apps within the first day.

“We are surprised about the incredible response”, says Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “The developers have done a great job bringing over 1,000 apps into the store. The users like how easy the Mac App Store works and how much fun it is to use.”

Process innovation

What Apple shows is that innovation isn’t synonymous for developing a new product. The Mac App Store is actually a perfect example for the important contribution process-innovations give to entrepreneurial success. Apple hasn’t only managed to create a new sales channel but also to connect the customer even stronger to the brand. What the computer- and multimedia-giant shows is what defines an innovative company: Developing further is being realised across all areas of the company.

Comprehensive Innovation management

LEAD Innovation has commited to comprehensive innovation management. Cause LEAD accompanies clients not only throughout the entire innovation process but also across all company areas. Raimund CARL, equity-partner at LEAD Innovation: “The potential of innovation can only be exhausted if you are able to see the whole picture.”

LEAD Roadshow 2010

Five cities, over 1600 kilometers in five days and more than 100 participating companies from all kinds of different sectors - the LEAD Roadshow has been a great success.

We are especially pleased with the positive feedback of the participants. „Very inspiring LEAD Users“ or „Networking at an absolutely high level“ were just some of the comments - we give thanks to all visitors and hope that we can make it even better next year.

Open Innovation - open to the future

Also this year we provided an afternoon full of Open Innovation to all the participators, as successful innovation management is still the decisive key to growth and economic success.
This is why it was our specific concern not to only communicate theory but also concrete and definite answers to practical implementations. Hence, the LEAD User method was directly transmitted from theory into practice in a workshop.

The LEAD User method

After working on countless topics and search fields from the whole variety of areas it was clear to everybody: the LEAD User Method is independent from sectors and thinking outside the box is not only an attempt but a definite action.
Because something new can only arise if the step to novel insights is actually being made.

Reports from clients and LEAD Users

Something new has already been brought into the world by numerous clients of LEAD Innovation. Some of them have given insight into their co-operation with LEAD and their concrete implementation into new products to the participants at the Roadshow. Also LEAD Users have given reports and most of all finally an answer to what a LEAD User actually is: an innovative character, a „nerd“ with a product need, that he/she has already a long time before the total market. Those LEAD Users are identified by us and will then help our clients to generate new products.

LEAD Innovation

This is how innovations with a clearly lower flop risk can be generated. You have missed the LEAD Roadshow 2010 and don‘t want to wait until 2011 in order to get to know LEAD? Contact us!

We are looking forward to the future and would like to give thanks to our clients and to the LEAD Users for their important input at the LEAD Roadshow.

BAUMA 2010

The atmosphere at the BAUMA 2010 was very positive even though there was no flight traffic over Europe and about 50 exhibitors weren’t able to travel to Germany. “The general mood shows that the low-bottom of the economic crisis has been overcome,” says Ralf Wezel, Secretery General of CECE, Committee for European Construction Equipment.

Statements of exhibitors at the BAUMA 2010 can be interpreted as the economic upward trend for the international construction machine sector everybody was hoping for.

Already at half-time of the exhibition some exhibitors report about more sales than they had even planned. Also, almost half of the exhibitors expect a better economic situation in the near future, according to a representative survey by TNS-Infratest.

Michael PUTZ, CEO at LEAD Innovation Management: “ This change in atmosphere was clearly senseable and is a very positive sign for us. One of the most innovative areas is also one of the most important markets for LEAD Innovation.” Apart from very remarkable innovations by companies like Volvo or PERI we were truly impressed by the exhibition area of LEAD Innovation-client LIEBHERR. “LIEBHERR exhibits on an area of over 13.000m2 and has constructed a building that some competitors would love to have as their company headquarter. It’s going to be taken down after one week and stored in order to host LIEBHERR also during the next 3 BAUMA exhibitions. – And then of course also the innovations done by LEAD”, says Raimund CARL, equity-partner at LEAD Innovation in Vienna.

We take the positive outlook seriously and are looking forward to an innovative future!

Room for openness in Vienna's 7th dictrict.
April 19, 2010
We are moving!

Into a new future.

After having accessed to new businesses as well as having extended our product portfolio we also want to reach out high – and follow our visions with a removal into the LEAD Office of the Future.

LEAD Office of the Future

What would represent LEAD Innovation better than an innovative officeworld, which has walls out of glass that aren’t just a guarenty for physical but also for mental vision? And where is the place at which it would be better to bring something new into the world than in rooms which invisibly connect to the outside world?

Open Innovation should just not only be theory but also vivid practice. This is why we implement our philosophy not only for our clients but also for ourselves.

We also still have the aim of connecting creativity and quality in a unique way. That is why we are glad to be able to stay in Vienna’s 7th district which is popular for representing the values above.

Having direct contact to Europe’s most frequented shopping street we are also able to realize product tests with representative samples at any time.

Welcome to the future!

Welcome to LEAD Innovation Management – and to a service which of course will also be at highest class in our new office. We also want to seize the occasion and say Thank you to all our clients for their trust and the positive work. We are already looking forward to your visit 2011 in the LEAD Office of the Future!

The new BMW 5 Series

The new BMW 5 series has been on the market since March 20th and we have been testing it today. Cause if there is any sector at which we could define ourselves as early adopters it would be the area of automotives.

We made the road test with the BMW 535i which has a Straight six-cylinder petrol engine and 306 hp. It’s safe to say that this car has definitely surpassed all our expectations.

Innovative features like the Integral Active Steering contribute to a driving experience at a new class. Integral Active Steering means that at speeds until about 60 km/h the back wheels steer oppositely to the front wheels. This leads to the feeling of a closer wheel-to-wheel situation and better versatility and agility.

Also the Head-Up Display which screens important information directly onto the windshield helps that the joy of driving is not being distracted by anything. These are just two samples of the intelligent technologies which support drivers of the new BMW 5 series.

Adrian van Hooydon who is the leader of the BMW Group Design says that the BMW 5 series is the core product of the brand and the perfect combination of sportivity and elegance.

Not only the car itself but also its marketing is impressive: the teaser video which announced the the new BMW presented the two concepts of sportivity and elegance in a perfect way as well. 714 seemingly weightless silver balls form a kinetic sculpture, come together to shape a car, a BMW. The ideology of the brand BMW is sensible in a very aesthetic way.

Equity-partner Raimund CARL gives an interview about the LEAD User method

For the bachelor-thesis with the title ‘A critical investigation of the LEAD User concept with special regard to the area of consumer goods’ Raimund CARL gave an interview to Teresa Susanne Blenk.

The aim of the article was, on one hand, to give an overview of the LEAD User method as well as to give insights in different possibilities of applying the method to the area of consumer goods. On the other hand Teresa Susanne Blenk discusses positive and negative aspects of the concept.

Outline of the interview:

[…] Where do you see the strenghts of the LEAD User method? Which aims are followed by companies that work with LEAD User projects?

Raimund CARL:

Generally speaking one of the biggest advantages of the LEAD User method is to have a tool that reduces the risk of flopping new products.

Working with the LEAD User method always needs a concrete problem definition of the given company.
If, for example, a company doesn’t have enough ideas, or doesn’t have the right strategies to proceed with their ideas, the LEAD User method can be used in order to conduct external innovation sources and integrate them into the innovavtion process.

A client once explained their problem as “not viewing the whole picture and being blind to what’s outside of their company”. The LEAD User method helps to generate breakthrough-innovations instead of incremental inventions. This leads to what LEAD defines as an innovation: invention PLUS market success! […]

Steve Jobs presents the iPad in San Francisco (CA)

January 27, 2010
Apple presents the new tablet computer ‘iPad’

There hasn’t been a single day without any rumour about the new iPad – now it’s finally there: Apple-CEO Steve Jobs has presented his newest product, the iPad, in San Francisco.

Visually the tablet computer reminds of a bigger version of the iPhone as it’s also equipped with a capazitive, multitouch-screen. 9.7 inches and a high resolution screen provide perfect media consumption to go: surfing the net, listening to music, watching videos or pics – the iPad makes it possible everywhere and at every time.

In addition, Apple pronounces that the 140.000 iPhone-apps will also run on the iPad – in adjusted resoltion of course, so that the big screen will be made use of as a whole.

But the iPad cannot only be used for leisure time activities: a new iWork version (Keynote, Pages and Numbers for 9.99 dollars each) with a new user-interface also makes the iPad a perfect partner for professional aims.

The first devices with WLAN shall be available by the end of March/the beginning of April of 2010. If the desired market success will help the invention to also become an innovation, remains to be seen in the future – we are curious about it!

Westfälische Provinzial praises LEAD Innovation in their intern magazin

Innovation offensive

Research project ‘Rotes Haus’ (red house) for new ways in product development:

“The most important thing within such a project are the people you work with”, knows Frank Bistrick, initiator of the research project ‘Rotes Haus’. The LEAD User method works by bringing innovative people with different points of views together and let them develop new ideas by using different kinds of creativity techniques.
This is the reason why an internal projectteam with Norbert Lessmann as their project leader came together and generated ideas with service providers from ‘Telekom’ and ‘Wüstenrot’, a building contractor and with a client who owns an apartment building. Four agency managers and one employee of a real estate center were participating and representing the ‘Sparkasse’.

Change of view

“The internal team takes many subject matters for granted and doesn't put them into question anymore”, explains Frank Bistrick. “That’s why a view from the outside often helps to get rid of old patterns of thoughts.”

Growing terms of insurance can be used as a good expample: Is the increasing complexity really necessary?
Trends and needs were transferred into a profile in the preparation phase for the project ‘Rotes Haus’. Using this profile as a model in terms of which characteristics are necessary to be a LEAD User made it possible to select the right participants for the LEAD User conference.

“The demands of our sales partners concerning an innovative building insurance and efficient selling processes have always been center of attention. “In the end we wanted to generate concrete solutions that could be measured up with those goals”, says Bistrick. And they were plentiful: Ideas were generated, given a name, dismissed, thought to be good, developed and finally rated in terms of relvance on the first day of the conference. The ideas which were rated the highest by the intern project team were being developed to a complete concept the following day.

A simple principle convinces

By the end of the conference it was clear to everybody: The generated ideas are fully worthwhile to follow and develop them further. The internal project team was particularly enthuisiastic about the “Mietbefreiungsplan” (=rent-release-plan) which has already been developed to a pilot product. Many other concepts and also ideas which have been generated ‘indidentally’ will be evaluated and developed further. “All these impulses and ideas have a whole lot of pontential”, knows a satisfied Frank Bistrick.

The youngest generation of the amazon kindle

November 3, 2009
The new amazon kindle

One of our most important tasks is finding LEAD Users – now a collegue almost found himself. He is not a LEAD User though, but in the area of electronic books he may call himself an early adopter. He has been one of the first customers in Europe who owns the new amazon kindle as it hasn’t been available outside of the United States until now.

Our collegue’s affinity towards electronic innovations can be used as the perfect example in order to explain the difference between LEAD Users and early adopters: Whereas LEAD Users find themselves at the beginning of the product development process, as they have such a strong need for a product that they fiddle about with what they need, early adopters find themselves at the beginning of the product life cycle, as they are the first to buy a certain product - like our collegue who aquired the amazon kindle.

Weighing 300 gramms and being only 9 mm thick makes the kindle a true marvel and not only thinner but also lighter than a conventional book.

A whole new world opens up to the digital modern nomad: every book which is available on
amazon can be downloaded at any time and at any place for about 10 dollars - this only takes 60 seconds. Thus the kindle is even less expensive than its ancestors out of paper.

One negative point though: ebooks won’t be available in German until the market isn’t big enough, according to Ian Freed, vice president of amazon digital services.

But technical specifications leave nothing to be desired: the capacity of a kindle gives us the possibility to save around 1500 ebooks – and therefore makes us totally independent from any library’s opening hours.

In addition, the power consumption is extremely efficient. The new technology of elnk doesn’t project but physically write the text – therefore power is only needed when turning the page. That the screen doesn’t need power for illumination also clears all health concerns as not being harmful to our eyes.

We don’t know yet if the invention e-book-reader is also going to be an innovation, as this will only be determined by market success. Having a look at the number of competitors who are trying to push into the market though, the success of ebook tools on the marktet is probably only a matter of time.

Cooking together at the LEAD User conference

In a wonderful atmosphere we cooked with our clients from HETTICH Holding GmbH & Co. oHG and our estimated LEAD Users. Together we created and enjoyed a great evening programme. In a MIELE show kitchen we had the opportunity to directly have a go on the product, to demonstrate and present ideas generated during the day and to develop new ideas in the working process. Cooking together was great fun and gave us the chance to socialise with our participants and of course to enjoy culinary delights.

Visit at the ISH 2009 in Frankfurt

“Bathrooms” was one of the most exciting areas of the commercial sector at the ISH.
Design and spa factor appeared to be particularly strong trends – many bath tubs, embedded in a sea of stones, in wood or in other materials, in many cases also had features of a whirlpool. The bathroom presentations were definitely a feast for the eyes!

In the field of renewable energy and building technology the fair truly offered a new world of possibilities, ranging from new solar technologies to grey water use and “remote-controlled” houses.

All things considered, the fair provided an excellent overview of new developments and trends on the market.

LEAD Innovation Day

LEAD Innovation Management was invited to arrange an “Innovation Day” for over 100 employees of the US-American pharmaceutical company Abbott. On November 19th, 2007 we tried to give Abbott’s employees a better understanding of innovation. In various workshops we were dealing with topics like innovation strategy, trends, user innovation and LEAD Users. A trip on the mobility device Segway rounded the day off. The highlight was a gala dinner at the “Platinum” in the new Uniqa Towers in Vienna, where a panel discussion with Ingo Raimon (Managing Director, Abbott) and Niki Lauda on future innovation in Formula 1, aviation and health care industry took place.

A successful day at Abbott was the beginning of an overall innovation programme.

LEAD Circle°

A core element of the LEAD User method is the integration of analogous and related fields into the innovation process. Since experts from other industries look at your innovation questions and problems regarding product, service or technology development from a completely different angle, unusual solutions are often the result.

Feedback of our clients concerning this approach was exceptionally positive, which is why we decided to set up the LEAD Circle. The LEAD Circle aims at connecting companies with other industries and brings them together for innovation workshops.

During a one-and-a-half day workshop participants from various industries discuss and analyse company-specific questions.

Each LEAD Circle has one main focus and deals with questions and problems of individual companies. For the fourth quarter in 2007 we chose the following topics:
  • New services
The share of services in terms of total economic value has constantly been rising over the past years. Innovative services – what will they be like in the future? The LEAD Circle does not only address to classic service companies (like banks, insurance providers, tour operators etc.) but also to industrial companies providing product supporting services.
  • Easy usage
Intelligent products are designed to make the customers’ lives easier and to increase customer satisfaction. How do other industries solve problems and questions around ergonomics and usability? This particular LEAD Circle turns to a broad group of companies whose main focus is “the user” throughout the entire product development process.
  • Building industry
In the building industry rising pricing pressure poses a challenge which can be evaded by means of regular innovations. This particular LEAD Circle addresses supply companies in the construction industry interested in innovative and open know-how transfer.

Did we arouse your curiosity? If you are interested in one or several of these topics, feel free to contact us.

The iPhone is finally on the market

Deutsche Telekom, a client and network partner of LEAD Innovation Management, gave Michael Putz the opportunity to have a close look at the new Apple iPhone. It is a fascinating device that inspires and motivates discussions on the differences between breakthrough innovation, radical innovation and springboard innovation. Ralph Schepp, portfolio manager working in the headquarters in Bonn, regularly contributes new aspects and perspectives to the ever-new understanding and interpretation of these definitions. In the case of Apple iPhone we can only consider ourselves early adopters but definitely not LEAD Users.

LEAD User to the power of two – Innovation management 2.0

In the past few years we managed to prove to many companies that the LEAD User method is a very effective tool for generating ideas with very high potential of success. This brought up the idea: Why not use this thriving method for our own product extension? This is why we held a LEAD User conference to develop our own product extension process.

Project title: “Innovation management 2.0”

We invited and involved pioneer users from the target market and analogous (related) fields, following the same procedure as in LEAD User projects for our clients: The target market-group was made up of innovation managers from reputed companies. The analogous fields-group consisted of people from various industry sectors: film industry, university, human resources management and corporate development.

The list of participants supporting was full of innovative personalities:

Target market:
Dr. Johannes BERGMAIR, Head of "Life Science" department, ofi – Austrian Research Institute for Chemistry and Technology, Vienna
Gerald MISCHKE, Innovation Management, DaimlerChrysler AG, Stuttgart
Ralph SCHEPP, Innovation Management, Deutsche Telekom AG, Bonn
Johann PENEDER, Head of Product and Service Development, DOKA Industrie GmbH, Amstetten

Analogous and related fields:
Prof. Dr. Hanns ABELE, Professor of analytical economics, Vienna University of Economics and Business, Vienna
Alexander PLÜMACHER, Strategy adviser, corporate consultant at Tricon, Berlin
Roland SPITZEGGER. Managing director, ESP Executive Search GmbH, Bad Homburg
Lukas STURM Director & screenplay writer, Neulandproduktion, Vienna

Location:
Burghotel Kranichberg near Vienna. We spent two very intensive days producing ideas, creating, dismissing, recreating and developing new concepts.

The result:
Two new LEAD User-service packages that will help us to successfully support our clients throughout the entire innovation process. “Proof of Concept” only to mention one particular result of the conference; this method allows LEAD Users to evaluate and improve already existing business ideas. “Proof of Concept is also very interesting for investors, as they can obtain expert opinions of LEAD Users before making an investment”, said one of the enthusiastic LEAD Users.

Several enquiries concerning this service clearly prove that the LEAD User method enables us to create products and services the market needs and demands.

At the end of the second conference day we were all convinced that our company as well as our clients will sustainably profit from this conference. We look forward to future projects!

We have changed. LEAD USER network becomes LEAD Innovation Management.

A few years ago, we started out as pioneers, turning innovation management inside out with the LEAD User method. Today, we are proud that this scientific approach is met with enthusiasm in the business world.

LEAD User method
The network we established over the past few years enables us to bring qualified knowledge sources (LEAD Users) and companies from all industry sectors together and to give them the opportunity to invent, improve and innovate to the best possible extent. This is absolutely in line with the new trend towards Open Innovation. We would like to say THANK YOU to all LEAD Users who have accompanied us on our way so far and to all the companies who have entrusted us with their projects.

New service
According to our credo of constant change, we have developed over the past few years, too. We profited from user integration, new service modules and new advice approaches could evolve throughout the entire innovation process.

New appearance
These developments should not go unnoticed therefore we change our name and our appearance. But: People are still the main focus of LEAD; people with ideas remain the core of our processes. We look forward to offering and providing you with our services renowned for spirit of innovation, charm and quality.
